A copper-based, non-hormonal intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) that prevents the fertilized egg from getting implanted in the uterus. This activity is reinforced in an ancillary manner by the presence of copper. Copper has a cytotoxic effect on gametes which causes damage to sperm, and inhibits fertilization. The UT 380® IUD is effective from the day it has been inserted.
A long-term (5 years) reversible contraceptive method, which is indicated in nulliparous, primiparous and multiparous women for:
- Usual first-line intrauterine contraception,
- emergency post-coital intrauterine contraception (within 5 days of unprotected or poorly protected intercourse)
- postpartum and post-abortion intrauterine contraception (in 48 hours post-partum or post-abortion or after complete involution of the uterus).
UT 380® is made up of a body composed of two flexible polyethylene arms, which contains barium sulphate, starting from a vertical axis, around which a 380 mm2 copper wire is wound. A single strand nylon thread is attached at its center to the base of the device.
